Powerful winger Tim Visser looks set to make his long-awaited debut for Scotland during this summer’s tour of Australasia when the Dutchman will qualify for selection through residency.

Andy Robinson took Visser to Edinburgh from Newcastle in 2009, with the winger making it clear he was determined to one day play for Scotland, and the head coach could now be about to name the 24-year old in his squad for this summer’s tour.

The 24-year old will have been in the Scottish capital for three years on June 12, meaning he will have qualified to represent the country through residency rules, simultaneously allowing Robinson to add one of the most effective wingers in Europe to his plans.

Visser wouldn’t be available for Scotland’s match against Australia at the beginning of June, however, would be free to play against Fiji and Samoa later in June.

Punters on the Betfair Rugby Union site have made a profit this season thanks to the Edinburgh speedster. He finished the Pro12 season as both the Player’s Player of the Year and as the league’s leading try scorer, as well as playing a massive role in the club reaching the semi-finals of the Heineken Cup; scoring four tries in eight appearances in Europe.

Visser’s availability will be a massive boost to Robinson, who has seen his full-back and wing division hit hard by injury and retirements since the end of their shocking Six Nations campaign. Lee Jones and Rory Lamont will be absent from this summer’s tour through injury, while Chris Paterson and Simon Danielli have both decided to hang up their boots.

Seven straight defeats mean Scotland will now know another loss would usher in their poorest run of results since their 13-game winless run in the late 70’s. Visser will certainly give Robinson a better chance of turning this dismal run of results around and the head coach will be desperate to have the winger in his ranks as soon as he can.

Rob Howley has revealed that he will use Wales’ upcoming clash against the Barbarians as a chance to audition some players, as he weighs up his squad for this summer’s tour of Australia.

The caretaker head coach, who is covering for the absent Warren Gatland, has picked four uncapped players in the 38-man squad that will take on the famous Baa Baas in Cardiff, next month.

The match will also allow Martyn Williams the chance to finally clinch his 100th Welsh cap, the flanker returning to the squad after missing out on the World Cup and Six Nations.

Scarlets duo, Liam Williams and Rhodri Jones, are joined by Ospreys centre, Ashley Beck, and Cardiff winger, Harry Robinson, in earning their first call up to the national side, all now looking to impress enough to make the plane to Australia, following the Barbarians match.

Key duo, Mike Phillips and James Hook, will link up with the squad, following their season in France. Also named in the squad is injured captain, Sam Warburton, who is expected to recover from his shoulder problem in time to lead the side out in Cardiff.

There are some notable absences from the 38-man party, with Cardiff Blues centre, Jamie Roberts, and Ospreys hooker, Huw Bennett, both missing out on this summer’s internationals through injury.

Confidence throughout the Welsh camp is currently at the highest it has been for some time, coming off the back of their World Cup campaign and Grand Slam win at the Six Nations.

Howley made it clear that he was looking for the team to get their summer off to a positive start, with a victorious performance against the Baa Baas, before they set off for Australia.

“We hope to get the summer off to a winning start against the Baa-Baas, and everyone who figures in that game will be playing for a place on the tour.”

Sir Alex Ferguson vowed he and his Manchester United players are ready to ‘go again’ in an effort to dethrone new Premier League champions Manchester City next season.

United came within minutes of securing a record 20th domestic title on a dramatic last-day on Sunday but lost their grip on the crown because of two late goals at the Etihad Stadium, which secured City a 3-2 win against 10-man QPR and a first success for 44 years amid scenes of hysteria.

“On behalf of Manchester United I congratulate Manchester City on winning the Premier League,” said Ferguson.

“It’s not an easy league to win and anyone who wins it deserves it because it is a long haul.”

United did their bit by beating Sunderland on Wearside and their 89 points total was the highest for the runners-up in 20 seasons of the Premier League, and online bets placed ahead of the campaign reflected expectations of more Reds success.

Wayne Rooney scored the only goal of the game but an air of despondence soon spread once Sunderland supporters started cheering the late goals back in Manchester.

Ferguson said the bitter taste of defeat on goal difference to their local rivals would put hairs on the chests of his younger players and promised he would not walk away from Old Trafford.

It will be interesting to see which team soccer betting tips ahead of next season favour for the the title, but, while the United boss argued the experience would serve his players well, he acknowledged the power was now in City’s hands.

“Experiences of a good type enthuse people but, when they have a bad one, it brings a sense of determination in you,” he added.

“The players we think we have here, the younger players, they’ve got a good resolve about them. There should be a good response because they have got the right character.

“Missing out on the title shouldn’t do them any harm. We don’t like doing it but, at the end of the day, you have to kick on and take the challenges because we are good at that.”

Stuart Lancaster has backed Danny Care to take his chance this summer after the scrum-half was named in the England squad for the tour of South Africa, returning to the setup following a series of well-publicised off-field issues.

The Quins star missed the Six Nations campaign earlier this year when Lancaster left him out of the squad on the back of Care’s alcohol-related misdemeanours, and the omission was a major topic of discussion among many Betfair punters.

But the talented scrum half has been as in the headlines for the right reasons during the closing weeks of the season, producing a string of impressive performances for Harlequins, who are fancied in the Aviva Premiership betting to win this year’s Grand Final, and convincing Lancaster to hand him a recall.

England’s head coach is well aware of just what Care is capable of, after working with the half-back during their time together at Leeds, and he has warned the 25-year old that he will have to be on his best behaviour, in what could be his final chance with the national side under Lancaster.

“In order to be an England player on the field you have to be able to lead yourself off the field. Danny needed to reassure me he could. I met Danny. I am pleased with the progress he has made and the maturity he is now showing off the field,” said Lancaster.

“It is a great opportunity, but equally he knows he is treading a very fine line. I trust him enough to have the confidence to take him though. He is a player in form and playing at a good club who are in a big Premiership semi-final this weekend.”

Northampton’s Lee Dickson is the current man in possession of the England number-nine jersey; however, it’ll be hard for Lancaster to overlook the rejuvenated Care, who has been in some of the best form of his career since switching his full focus to on-field activities.

Three of the biggest clubs in the Premier League – namely, Chelsea and the two Manchester teams, United and City – are ready to pounce on Fulham’s Belgian midfielder, Moussa Dembele, according to Goal.com.

The versatile 24-year-old, who has also courted moves to Arsenal, Liverpool, and Tottenham in the past few months, has been a linchpin in the Cottagers side, this season, helping his club take ninth in the table. Get great odds on www.betvictor.com.

He joined Fulham from Dutch outfit, AZ Alkmaar, in 2010, putting pen to paper on a three-year agreement. He had been resident in the Eredivisie for the previous four seasons, racking up 118 appearances and 24 goals for AZ.

Dembele is unlikely to remain at Craven Cottage for the 2012/13 campaign, given the level of interest from the Premier League’s high-flyers, and the fact that he could now demand wages far in excess of Fulham’s top line.

Unfortunately, for local fans, at least, his exit could set a precedent; Clint Dempsey is reportedly mulling over his future in London, meaning that Fulham could begin the next season without two of their best players.

Dembele, valued at £5-10m when he joined from Alkmaar, two years ago, is now worth a reported £12-15m. He is, therefore, a budget alternative to the likes of Wesley Sneijder and Eden Hazard.

The latter two players – Hazard, in particular – have attracted the attention of the top four or five clubs in as many European leagues. However, with respective values of £24m and £28m, they are prohibitively expensive.

Dembele could yet leave Fulham for a sub-£10m fee – a bargain, given his potential, tender age, and his ability to play in both defensive and offensive midfield positions, as well as up front with the strikers.

The Belgian international would be a fine summer prize for Alex Ferguson, who needs a long-term replacement for veteran player, Paul Scholes, whose fate, next season, is not yet clear.

Manchester City are the current favourites to win the title, this season, with Premier League betting with Bet Victor.

West Coast coach John Worsfold says he will not change his tactics, despite accusations that his players are playing outside of the spirit of the game.

The Eagles have come under fire this week after their opening six matches yielded 58 free kicks for high tackles – 15 more than next-placed Fremantle.

West Coast players have been accused of drawing contact by dropping at the knees or lifting their arms, with North Melbourne coach Brad Scott seeking AFL clarification on the issue on Wednesday.Scott felt aggrieved after his team was on the wrong end of a 29-15 free kick count against the Eagles last weekend.

Worsfold insisted his players were not playing for free kicks and is unfazed by the criticism, and many of those who regularly bet on Aussie Rules matches would be well-advised to take his words on board.

“I don’t have to defend them. I’m not sure what we have to defend them over. I think (AFL umpires manager) Jeff Gieschen said that all the tackles were high,” said the Eagles coach.

“There’s a lot of people that have got to keep jobs in footy and they need something to talk about.

“It’s not the biggest issue in the game that I’ve ever dealt with. It’s just there. I’m happy to listen to it all play out. It makes no difference to the way we go about our footy.”

Worsfold hopes the storm does not detract from his team’s excellent start to the season and has urged his players to continue playing aggressive football.

“The key thing is that we go in hard for the footy. Maybe harder than other teams, I don’t know, that’s up for other people to judge,” added Worsfold.

“Our players have got extraordinary appetite to go in and win the hard loose ball.”

All eyes will be on Etihad Stadium on Saturday night when the Premiership leaders meet Essendon, and it will be interesting to note whether or not Worsfold’s comments affect Aussie Rules betting ahead of the match.

On ground rather more testing than the official going description of ‘good to soft’, the Aidan O’Brien-trained Camelot justified favouritism in the Group 1 Qipco 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, on Saturday, in tremendous fashion.

The horse produced a performance that already has race fans dreaming of him becoming the first potential Triple Crown winner since the legendary Nijinsky, in 1970, writes Elliot Slater.

Ridden by O’Brien’s ice-cool 18-year-old son, Joseph, Camelot was sent off the 15/8 in the horse racing tips, to win the top-class mile contest. He appeared to have plenty to do, as his young rider bided his time at the rear of the group, racing towards the stand side in the 18-runner contest.

As Craven Stakes winner, Trumpet Major, went for home, coming out of the dip, O’Brien asked Camelot to lengthen his stride; the reaction was tremendous, as the son of Montjeu powered up the Newmarket hill and surged to the front, ahead of the fading Hannon runner, and Gallic raider, French Fifteen.

He ran on powerfully to score by a neck, with another French runner, Hermival, finishing best of the runners on the far side, to grab third place.

There’s little doubt that Camelot needed every yard of the mile to score, as he remarkably became the first offspring of his outstanding sire to win over eight furlongs in Group 1 company. Bookies were immediately running for cover, as the more suitable trip of 12 furlongs of the Investec Derby looks far more likely to play to the strengths of the Ballydoyle colt.

He is now as short as 4/5 in the horse racing betting to score at Epsom; with some firms, the best price on offer in the ante-post market for the blue riband contest is just 5/4.

It would be a brave man who would bet against Camelot, on June 2, and already the talk is of the new racing superstar potentially having a crack at the St Leger in September, if he does indeed win the second leg of the Triple Crown, next month.

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard believes the club continue to prove their critics wrong as they look forward to a Champions League showdown with Bayern Munich on May 19.

Having struggled under former manager Andre Villas-Boas, the Blues have flourished since the instalment of interim boss Roberto Di Matteo, and no better place was that highlighted than at the Nou Camp on Tuesday.

To be fair to Villas-Boas, Chelsea were enjoying success in Europe under the inexperienced Portuguese tactician, however their Premier League form meant his time was limited, especially under the watchful eye of owner Roman Abramovich.

Di Matteo has managed to take that foundation in the European competition and take it forward with plenty of spirit, as Chelsea have now seen of Benfica and incredibly Barcelona under his tenure.

One of the best things the Italian has done is bringing the old guard at Stamford Bridge back into the fold and veteran Lampard has thrived since his return to regular football.

The 33-year-old was delighted to help grind out a result at the Nou Camp against the European champions and with skipper John Terry suspended for the final, it could be Lampard lifting the trophy and proving all the doubters wrong should they overcome Bayern.

However the modest midfielder is just focused on helping the club bring the trophy back to west London.

He said: “My ego doesn’t need to lift it.

“I’d love to win it to be of the team that wins it.

“So, if we win it, anyone can lift it – that’s irrelevant.”

Punters who bet on the Champions League are backing Bayern to lift the trophy for a fifth time.

However, Chelsea were underdogs in the football betting for the Barcelona tie too.

At 22, Rebecca Adlington is gearing up for her second Olympic Games, and she’s going back with a reputation to uphold.

In her first Olympics at Beijing in 2008, the Mansfield-based swimmer won two gold medals, for the 800m Freestyle and 400m Freestyle.

Last year, Rebecca won the 800m Freestyle gold at the World Championships. With this win, she completed her international set, as she already was Olympic, European, and Commonwealth Games champion.

Rebecca had a tough race at the World Championships, as she was never more than 0.5 seconds apart from the defending champion, Lotte Friis. Rebecca used all her strength to pull ahead in the last 50m.

Since then, Rebecca has bettered her time by swimming the 800m freestyle in eight minutes and 18.54 seconds at the British Swimming Championships, in London, in March. The win gave her a gold and her second London 2012 qualification.

She will swim both the 800m Freestyle and the 400m Freestyle at the summer games, making the youngster a popular option in London 2012 betting tips.

The British Swimming Championships were held in the Aquatics Centre, built for the London 2012 Olympics.

After her victory, Adlington told the BBC: “I tried to get the crowd involved. The noise was incredible; even before the race, it gives you such a buzz. Hopefully I can use it in the summer.”

Adlington is clearly feeling confident about her chances of success at London 2012, and is looking forward to having the support of the home crowd.

She will be joined in the 800m Freestyle by 19 year-old Eleanor Faulkner, who came second, with a personal best time of 8 minutes, 27.11 seconds.

Faulkner said: “I’m really shocked that I’m going in an individual event. I wanted to go out and do my best, and if I made the relay team, great, but I was thinking about 2016, so this is great.”

Two months that’s how long it takes to decide the issue of who is going to win the Stanley Cup, that probably makes it one of the most demanding and gruelling playoff series in sports with many of the seven-game series going the distance and that’s before you add in all the travelling.

All of that adds up to a recipe for upsets and we have seen the NHL playoffs produce some of the most stunning and perhaps frequent upsets of all of the major sports out there.

2003 was just such a year and the inexplicable collapse by the Colorado Avalanche against the Minnesota Wild Western Conference quarter-finals. Colorado had the edge with the seedings being ranked #3 against the #6 slot of the Wild. This was set-up as a high-powered offensive battle versus a battle hardened defence – all was well for the defensive stand at first as the Wild took the first three games before dropping the next three games. 3-1 down, with the next game back in Denver things looked to be bleak for the Wild. However, they managed to win three games consecutively, including two games on the road, with two separate 3-2 overtime victories to cap a remarkable comeback.

No look at playoff upsets would be complete without a mention of the Los Angeles Kings victory over the Edmonton Oilers in the Divisional semi-finals in 1982. The Oilers had finished some 48 points in front of the Kings in the regular season; they also had a devastating line-up with Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Paul Coffey and Grant Fuhr available to them. The teams split the first two games in what then were five game series and that set the stage for an amazing Game 3 which provided the Kings with the catalyst to go on and win the series. The Oilers led Game 3 5-0 at one stage before the Kings mounted their remarkable comeback, clawing their way back into the game to equalise with just seconds to go in regular time. Just minutes into overtime the Kings completed the job with a goal and went on to win the series.

The Kings would be eliminated in the divisional finals. The Oilers would soon become the dynasty of the eighties.

Upsets are sure to happen this season we just wish we knew where they were going to occur.
